About us

We act for and with owner managed businesses throughout the whole of England and this client base continues to grow steadily as a result of the quality of the compliance work we carry out, as well as our unique attitude, that focuses on the achievement of our clients’ goals

With three directors and a total team in excess of 30, we find ourselves large enough to deal with the needs of our most demanding clients yet small enough to care about our smallest.  Our client base itself ranges from individuals and families in business to commercial groups of companies. We understand that the needs of all our clients are of paramount importance, irrespective of the size of their businesses.

Let's get started

As a practice we are pleased to assist our clients through economic upturns and highs, as well as adverse trading situations and maintaining a close working relationship during these economic fluctuations has rewarded us with long term loyalty from these clients and a bond seems to exist that is rarely experienced in a professional relationship.

As you would expect from a well established firm such as ours, the provision of an accurate and “value for money” compliance service forms the backbone of what we do, ensuring to the best of our ability that our clients conform to the requirements of current legislation.  The same level of “attention to detail” is applied to the completion of an individual’s tax return, as is given to the audits of businesses we act for.

Whilst some of our clients still opt for us to carry out this compliance function only, more and more these days we are developing relationships where our focus is very much on the declared personal goals of the owners of the business.  Whether these are to sell the business via the open market or management buyout, pass the business on to family members, take a back seat, or simply “get through the current economic climate” in one piece, makes no difference to our senior team members as these are all frequently occurring requirements.

Strategic planning, high quality tax advice, profit improvement planning, fund raising and monitoring progress during projects are all now part of the day to day life of the Sibbalds team members, who not only deal with the historical aspect of compliance with you but more importantly, help you realise your personal goals.

We welcome clients of all business sizes and states of health and it is our pleasure to work with you, to make a difference.

Our New Home at The Cavendish Building

A fresh space

After more than a decade on Ashbourne Road, we’ve moved into The Cavendish Building – a modern new space in the heart of Derby city centre.

The move marks another important milestone in our journey, giving our team a contemporary, open environment designed for collaboration, creativity, and client-focused work.

The new office provides comfortable meeting spaces, improved technology, and easier access for visitors – helping us meet with clients more effectively and work together on what matters most. It reflects the same forward-thinking approach that guides everything we do: supporting businesses with clear advice, practical solutions, and long-term partnership.

Cloud Accounting Experts

embrace the power of the cloud

We are passionate about technology and the benefits that can bring to you and your business, and we are constantly researching and implementing software and tools to make your life easier and your business stronger.

You may have seen other firms talk about how they are “cloud accounting experts”, which in reality means they’ve probably got a few clients who use Xero or Quickbooks Online, and know a little bit about it.We also have detailed knowledge of many of the apps and add-ons that integrate with the popular cloud accounting packages which can help automate and digitalise your finance function.

David Bowler

Our approach is very different to the stereotypical accountancy firm. Let us help you to transform your business, embrace the power of the cloud, and become the partner to help you achieve your personal goals

A brief history of Sibbalds!

Our Journey

  1. Move to The Cavendish Building

After more than a decade at Ashbourne Road, Sibbalds relocated to The Cavendish Building in Derby city centre.

The move reflects our continued growth and commitment to providing the best environment for our clients and team. The new space offers modern meeting rooms, improved facilities, and greater accessibility — creating the ideal setting for collaboration, innovation, and long-term partnerships.

  2. Vision 2030

With the creation of our new Vision, Values and Mission Statement, we felt it was time now to update our branding to reflect the modern firm we had become.

This involved many hours of research and guidance from branding experts to incorporate a professional, modern and technologically focussed image and that is what you see today.

We also launched our "Vision 2030" strategic plan to the team, setting out our goal to become one of the leading independent advisers to Small to Medium Sized ambitious businesses in the East Midlands.

  3. Planning for the future

Jay became a shareholder at Sibbalds after demonstrating exceptional commitment and consistently going above and beyond in his day-to-day role.

His expertise and recent experience within the team have been instrumental in shaping our culture and working environment. This milestone also marked the first step in facilitating Terry's succession.

  4. Strengthening the Board

Hari joined us in February 2011, bringing with him decades of experience of working for medium to large regional firms, and with that his strong technical skills within audit and assurance.

We were now able to service a broader and larger client base, and the development of our audit team began. Within a few years we had almost doubled the number of audit clients we acted for and moved from paper based to digital audit files.

  5. A new focus

With David joining us, bringing a fresh set of ideas and experiences from working with some of the regions most progressive practices, we invested heavily in the development of new services to support our clients through the financial crisis and beyond.

A focus on advisory first, preparing management accounts and offering proactive guidance, was the start of an exciting evolution for us in what was our 80th year.

  6. A traditional firm

We were what you would call a traditional firm of Chartered Accountants. We provided all of the services you would expect – audits, accountancy and taxation – to owner managed businesses in Derby and the surrounding area – just like all of our competitors.

  7. Firm becomes Sibbald & Co

The firm became Sibbald & Co in 1974

  8. Our formation

The practice was formed in Derby, by a Chartered Accountant by the name of James Sibbald.

James Sibbald was later joined by Frederick Farnsworth and Allan Forsyth, to become James Sibbald, Forsyth and Farnsworth – one of the leading firms of Chartered Accountants in Derby at the time.
