On Wednesday 29th March, we closed the office for one of our regular team away days at The Enterprise Centre.
The objective of these is to get the team together to focus on “working ON the business, and not IN it” as is the case for many of us.
This time our focus was on several key objectives:
- Improving client service
- Reducing the time taken to turn around jobs
- Improving communication within the team and with clients
- Improving our overall efficiency
It’s important that we do this, to maintain a continuing level of improvement within our business. If you don’t currently do this in your own business we can strongly recommend it.
We found this quarter’s event really useful and came away with 20-30 new ideas which we will aim to implement over the next 3 months. Setting actions, assigning responsibility and deadlines, and following up is the key to success.
Taking time out from doing the day to day work of the business isn’t easy, and for many owners and managers the focus can initially be on the cost of doing this – whilst you’re out of the office, the work isn’t being done and you’re not earning money – but you have to focus on the long term benefits of activities such as this. Those businesses that do see the value in thinking strategically are the ones that succeed the most in our experience.
Team building icebreaker
Getting discussions going can be a challenge, as team members can be reluctant to speak at first. Using a team building activity, or icebreaker, can be a good place to start. A simple way of doing this is getting each team member to share an interesting fact about themselves that their colleagues may not know. It was amazing the things we learned the first time we did this! For example, Rob Holt shared how he was part of a Guinness World Record attempt at the world’s largest penalty shoot out!
Followed by lunch at Nico’s
To celebrate we went to Nico’s Italian Restaurant on Brick Street in Derby, just down the road from our offices on Ashbourne Road, where we enjoyed some home cooked Italian food. It’s worth a visit if you’ve never been before! The Tiramisu was delicious and the portions were huge, we were all very full at the end!
